Studios

Made from sustainably sourced and grown New Zealand timber, our studio cabins are great 1 room designs that can be used for many purposes.

Whether you're after a sleepout, holiday cabin, home office or hobby room, our studios are strong, relocatable and will last the test of time.

What is a cabin studio?

An Outpost Cabin Studio is a great addition to nearly any property, providing extra interior space without the need for council consent, making them a great alternative to the traditional extension.

Our cabin studios are all kitsets, providing all the materials you need to build your cabin. This includes the framing, the fixings, the cladding, even the instructions, making them a great DIY project if you have some building experience or an easy-to-follow, rapidly constructed professional build. All you, or your tradie, needs to do is provide a set of tools. We handle the rest - even shipping it to a depot near you or to your property by hiab truck for a modest extra charge.

+ Our customers use our cabins in lots of different ways, including:

+ Hobby Rooms

+ Man Caves

+ She-Sheds

+ Home Offices

+ Sleepouts

+ Holiday Cabins

And much more!

Need more space for nearly any purpose? A cabin studio could be the right choice for you.

The benefits of a cabin studio

New Zealanders love our cabin studios.
Here are a few reasons why:

'Built Tough'

Outpost Buildings cabin studios are built with toughness and durability in mind, using sustainably grown New Zealand pine as well as ZINCALUME or Colorsteel iron cladding.

This means our cabin studios are built to last for decades with minimal wear and tear, no matter what weather conditions they may be subject to. Wind, rain, snow, hail, heat - nothing’s a problem for our cabin studios.

NZ Made

We always keep the needs of New Zealanders in mind when we design our cabin studios, which is why, wherever possible, we choose to use New Zealand sourced materials.

By supporting our fellow Kiwi business owners, we ensure that you get a cabin studio that’s been designed for New Zealand conditions and for New Zealander needs.

Portable

One of the hardest choices when building a cabin is where you’re going to place it - after all, once it’s up, it’s there permanently, right?

Not with our kitset! Our cabin studios are designed to be portable, fitted with tough timber skids that allows them to be towed or lifted onto a trailer/hiab truck for relocating. This means that, if you change your mind about placement, shifting your studio cabin may be as easy as attaching a tow rope.

Better yet, this portability means that the cabins can be moved from property to property, letting you take your cabin to your new home or easily sell it on to a new owner. Cash back in your pocket - what’s not to like?

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I put a cabin on my property?

If you own your property freehold and have some land to spare, then yes, you can probably put a cabin on your property!

One of the biggest things to keep in mind before investing is whether or not you will need consent for your cabin. For our style of cabin - prefabricated, engineer-approved, under 30sqm, it’s likely that you won’t need consent.

You will need to consider:

+ Size. Kitset cabins can be built up to 30m2 without consent if they’ve had their design reviewed by a chartered professional engineer. Our studio cabin designs have that review done, so you won’t need to worry about this part.

+ Materials. Your cabin must meet the minimum standard under the building code to avoid needing consent. Again, our kitsets already do this. In fact, in a lot of cases, they exceed the requirements!

+ Facilities. There are some restrictions as to what can be included in your cabin. You aren’t supposed to live in these cabins exclusively, so they can’t be used as tiny homes - you’ll need a separate structure with potable water and other necessities in place to avoid consent. If you want your cabin to have a toilet or cooking facilities, for example, you’ll need consent. Note that Outpost Buildings products don’t come with these facilities built in, so no special considerations for our kitsets.

In terms of consent, our kitsets already meet all the requirements for not needing consent, including size, the materials used, and the facilities included. There are some other requirements, so if you’re concerned about whether or not you’ll need consent, speak with our team first and we’ll be able to guide you on next steps.
