The benefits of a portable cabin

We’re New Zealand’s leading provider of high-quality, durable portable kitset cabins, providing easy-to-build cabins for a wide variety of uses.
Here are just a few reasons why our portable cabins are so popular:

'Built Tough'

When you need a portable cabin that’s built to last, ours are the ones you reach for. We build our cabins tougher than most, using heavy-duty, NZ-grown timber in the framing and ZINCALUME or Colorsteel iron cladding.

This makes our portable cabins not just durable, but weather resistant and comfortable even in the worst of conditions. All you need to do is paint or stain the cabin appropriately - our tough materials will handle the rest.

You don’t just have to take our word for it either. We’re confident in our construction - so confident that we guarantee the quality of all the components and kitset prefabrication done in our workshops. We don’t just talk the talk - we walk it.

NZ Made

Why buy generic when you can buy tailored? We’ve designed and built our kitsets with your needs - and the needs of other New Zealanders - in mind.

Our portable cabins have been designed for a wide range of common uses, from sleepouts to lakeside cabins, and they excel in all the ways that matter for Kiwis: durability and comfort at the forefront.

How do we do it? By sourcing our materials from other New Zealand businesses wherever possible. This includes sustainably grown New Zealand pine - because we care about the country we live in. This ensures you not only get an excellent quality product, but can rest assured that the materials we’ve chosen have been picked with New Zealand conditions in mind.

Portable

The fact that our cabins are relocatable is one of the biggest reasons why so many Kiwis choose us for their cabins.

Our portable cabins are mounted on tough wooden skids, and don’t require a permanent foundation to be placed. This not only makes them far more flexible in where you put them, but also means that you can change your mind at any time about where they are. All you need to do is place them on a hiab truck and off they go to their new location.

The fact that our portable cabins aren’t fixed and are pre-fabricated also means that they are exempt under many of the requirements for consent for construction. In fact, most of the time, you won’t need consent for one of our portable kitsets. One less headache to deal with!

Rapid construction

Building extra interior space for your land can be expensive. Whether it’s a detached sleepout or an extension, you often need to source materials, invest in labour, deal with compliance - we know that sometimes the entire ordeal puts people off expanding their space altogether.

That’s why we aim to make it easy with our kitsets. They come with all the materials you need, which are guaranteed to meet or even exceed all New Zealand building standards. They also come with instructions, requiring only the addition of a set of basic tools, making it possible for an experienced builder to put them together over the course of a few days.

That means a higher quality cabin with less chance of mistakes, and all within a short timeframe. What’s not to like?

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I put a portable cabin on my property?

We won’t keep you in suspense. Yes, you can put a portable cabin on your property - with a few caveats!

In the past, you would’ve needed to tangle with the consenting process if you want to put a cabin - even a portable one - on your property. Thankfully, since 2020, there have been a raft of exemptions made, including those which apply to our range of portable cabins.

There are still a few rules to keep in mind:

Size. Portable kitset cabins can be placed on your land if they are 30m2 or less and if they’ve had their design reviewed by a chartered professional engineer.

Materials. Any cabin constructed, portable or otherwise, must meet the Building Code requirements for the materials.

Facilities. The exemptions only apply to cabins that won’t be lived in exclusively. You can’t use them as a tiny home. As such, there must be a building nearby that has access to facilities like toilets, potable water, cooking facilities, and so on. Otherwise, you’ll need consent.

It sounds like a lot of considerations, but we’ve made it easy. All of our portable cabin designs have been made to match these new exemptions, including the size, materials and facilities. While we can’t guarantee you won’t need consent based on your individual circumstances and intended use, our kitsets make it as easy as possible to get an exemption.

What are our portable cabins made from?

We use locally sourced parts and materials wherever possible, including the New Zealand pine that makes up the majority of our framing.

Depending on the style of your portable cabin, you can expect to find:

+ Durable timber frames, engineer designed for strength

+ Skid mounted treated timber bearers

+ Ply board & batten exterior wall siding
