Lean To Sheds

Our range of lean-to shed designs are built tough for use on farms.

Great for storing farm vehicles, equipment, hay, or acting as a paddock shelter for horses.

What is a lean-to shed?

Lean-to sheds are common sights on many New Zealand farms and lifestyle plots. They’re recognisable from their distinctive mono-pitch roof, which starts higher at the entrance to the shed and slopes downwards towards the rear. They are sometimes placed next to or attached to another building, appearing to ‘lean’ against them, hence the name, but they are also often built as standalone structures as well.

In our catalogue, you’ll find them referred to as Hunter style sheds, but they are also known as ‘skillion-roofed sheds’ as well.

Like all sheds, lean-to sheds are used primarily for storage. They provide ample room for garden tools, animal feed, dry goods, materials and other common items found around a rural home. However, the lean-to design is also often used for larger projects, such as in horse shelters and stables. They are very versatile, making them suitable for a huge range of uses.

The benefits of a lean-to shed

Our lean-to sheds are perfect additions to properties that need more outdoor storage space, but offer more than just an extra place to keep the spades.

Easy to build

All Outpost Buildings kitsets are designed to be straightforward to construct, with the smaller options able to be constructed over the course of a weekend by two people. Lean-to sheds, or Hunter sheds, are especially easy to build, making them an ideal choice for people who prefer to DIY.

Improve your organisation

Outpost lean-to shed designs help you to keep your life organised, providing a dedicated outdoor space to keep your tools, materials and other supplies. Use the space to keep your equipment organised and protected with a lockable door - ideal for fulfilling the terms of your contents insurance too.

Ease of access

Don’t force yourself to trek back into the house every time you need a new tool. Keep a lean-to shed on-hand near your project workspace to ensure that you have what you need, when you need it.

Free up your home

Don’t clutter up your home with garden and farming supplies. Use your ample outdoor space for protected storage through a lean-to shed instead.

Improve your property value

Storage makes a big difference to property sales - potential homebuyers are looking to fit their life into your home. Show them that there’s room to spare with a lean-to shed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it cheaper to build a lean-to shed or buy one?

Building a tool shed from scratch isn’t cheap. There’s the costs of hiring a builder, the resources required for sourcing materials, and the ever-difficult process of securing consents, should you want to build a decently sized structure.

If you want to build a lean-to shed from scratch, there are a number of costs you have to consider:

Deciding on a design,

Hiring a builder,

Sourcing materials,

Figuring out if you need consent, and,

Getting those consents if you need them.

There’s a lot involved in constructing what is usually quite a minor addition to your property. We’re making it easier with our range of kitset lean-to sheds - designed by experts with New Zealand conditions in mind.

Outpost Buildings lean-to shed kitsets have everything you need to build your lean-to included. That means the framing, the cladding, the design and even the fixings are sorted out for you, requiring you to provide only a basic set of tools to get started. Our step-by-step instructions mean that someone with even basic handyman skills can knock together a lean-to shed over the course of a week (though we do recommend a builder for our more advanced sheds).

This means you can rest easy in the fact that you’re getting all the customisability of a scratch-built lean-to shed, with all the certainty of quality of a bought lean-to shed.

We even help you with the shipping, arranging transportation of your chosen kitset to a Toll transport depot near you. If needed, we can provide a quote for a hiab truck to take your kitset right to your site.

What are our lean-to sheds made from?

Outpost lean-to sheds are built tough, designed for New Zealand conditions. How do we achieve some of the strongest kitsets on the market? By ensuring we use quality materials, sourced and manufactured right here in New Zealand.

The timber that makes up the framing and wall cladding is sustainably grown New Zealand pine, while the corrugated iron on the roof is genuine ZINCALUME or Colorsteel. We choose to support other Kiwi businesses not just because we’re proud Kiwis ourselves, but because we know that’s how we can create the best, toughed, most durable, portable kitsets that can take on anything the New Zealand weather has to throw at them.

In your lean-to kitset, you can expect to find:

Durable treated timber 6x2 inch framing

Exterior grade 15mm plywood end walls

Heavy duty 6x4 inch skid mounted base

Corrugated iron or Colorsteel roofing with a 10 year guarantee

Galvanised hinges & pad bolts
