Kitset Cabins
Our kitset cabins are 'Built Tough' and designed to meet (and exceed) the New Zealand building code.
Great for hobby rooms, sleepouts and home offices.
All Outpost cabins are relocatable and super strong so that they can be lifted with a hiab onto site if required.
What is a kitset cabin?
Outpost Kitset Cabins are a fantastic alternative to a typical constructed cabin. We put all the materials you need, from the framing to the fixings, into a single flat pack, then ship it to a transport depot near you. Inside, you’ll find everything you need to build your own cabin, including instructions. We recommend a builder for our cabin kitsets, with our kitsets making the building process quick and easy - and it saves you money when compared to a builder constructing a cabin from scratch.
Our NZ kitset cabins can be used in any of the ways a typical cabin could. They’re perfect for:
+ Hobby Rooms
+ Man Caves
+ Home Office
+ Garden Rooms
+ Lakeside Cabins
And more!
If you’ve ever felt the need for more space and you’ve got a little land to spare, then a kitset cabin could be a great addition to your property.
The benefits of a kitset cabin
Outpost Buildings is the leading provider of high-quality, durable kitset cabins in the New Zealand market.
Here are just a few of the reasons why people love our cabins:
Built Tough
Our kitset cabins are built tougher than the average, using heavy duty, NZ-grown timber framing and genuine ZINCALUME or Colorsteel iron cladding (with a 10-year guarantee).
This makes all of our cabins weatherproof, windproof, comfortable and capable of withstanding anything the New Zealand weather can throw at them once properly painted or stained.
We’re so confident in the construction of our cabins that we guarantee the quality of all the components and kitset construction done in our workshops.
NZ Made
We’ve designed and built our kitsets with the needs of New Zealanders in mind - we’re operated by Kiwis, and we produce cabins for the needs of Kiwis.
That’s why they’re built for a wide range of New Zealand conditions, from winter storms to freezing snow to summer time sun - and everything in between.
We choose to source our materials from other New Zealand businesses wherever possible, including sustainable New Zealand pine, to ensure that we not only support our fellow Kiwi business owners, but that everything that goes into your kitset is made to the highest possible standards, creating the best Kitset Cabins in NZ.
Portable
With some kitset cabins, once you’ve built it, it’s there forever - no changing your mind. Not so with Outpost Buildings!
All our kitset cabins are mounted on tough timber skids and require no fixed foundation. This means that you can tow, trailer or truck them wherever you want, even after they’ve been put together.
Small cabins may only require a 4WD, while larger cabins may need a hiab truck to shift. No matter what size you decide on, the portability of our cabins make them truly yours: put them where you want, when you want.
DIY
Building a cabin can be expensive. You have to source materials, invest in labour, possibly deal with consents and compliance - the headaches can sometimes make the cabin not worth the effort.
We make it easy with our kitsets. They come with all the materials you need, and are guaranteed to meet or exceed all New Zealand building standards. If you’re a handy sort, most of them can be put together either by yourself or with a handy friend or two - all instructions are included. If you’d prefer to be hands off, our kitsets are just as easy for a hired tradesperson to put together. For more advanced kits such as our pitched roof cabin, we recommend you use a builder for assembly.
With an Outpost kitset, all it takes is a little time, some effort, and some elbow grease to have your cabin ready to go.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do kitset cabins need consent?
From 31 August 2020, the Building Act provided a raft of new and extended building consent exemptions - many of which apply to the kitset cabins provided by Outpost Buildings - so you may find you don’t need consent for your cabin. This has made it much easier, faster and cheaper to get a cabin built on your land.
There are a few caveats to keep in mind:
Size. The new exemptions allow for kitset cabins to be built up to 30m2 if they’ve had their design reviewed by a chartered professional engineer. This includes our designs, which have been reviewed, so no concerns there.
Materials. Any cabin constructed must meet the Building Code for material durability. Our kitsets do - in fact, they often exceed the Code’s requirements!
Facilities. These new exemptions apply only to buildings that aren’t designed to be lived in exclusively. You must have a separate structure that has facilities like potable water already in place (like the main home). For toilet or cooking facilities, you’ll need consent as well.
Sounds like a lot of considerations? Don’t worry - our kitset sheds already meet nearly all the requirements of consent exemptions, including size, material and facilities. If you’re concerned about this side of the build, don’t hesitate to ask our team. They’ll be able to guide you through whether you should look at getting consent or not.
