For one lifestyle block owner, practical and durable buildings were a must- and that’s exactly why they chose Outpost Buildings not once, but twice.
Robert Crow’s first purchase was a 1 Bay Chicken Coop with a floor, bought over 15 years ago. Home to 16 free range hens, the coop has stood the test of time exceptionally well. Positioned beneath the olive trees, the hens enjoy a free-range lifestyle and reward Robert with over a dozen fresh eggs every day.
To help the hen house blend seamlessly into the property, it was painted to match Robert’s home- something he has continued with his newest Outpost building as well.

After years of reliable use from the hen house, Robert returned to Outpost this year to purchase a Borderland Shed for additional storage space. With a growing need for somewhere to store garden equipment, tools and his ride-on lawn mower, the shed proved to be the ideal solution.
Although not a builder, he utilised his DIY skills to assemble the shed together with his son and they found the process straightforward and manageable.
He says the hen house was relatively easy to put together but the Borderland Shed needed a second pair of hands. “With the weight of some bits and laying out the 6 metres of iron, it needed to be a two-man job.”

His advice for anyone tackling a kitset build? "Read all the instructions before you start and check that all the materials are present."
Robert has been especially pleased with the practical features and sturdy design of the shed.
“I really like the size of it. It’s got nice big doors and it fits on this space really nicely. It’s good quality as well- you can see the timber, it’s all properly treated,” he says.

Durability has also been a standout feature.
“We’re not actually that far from the sea so we do get a fair amount of sea spray. The hen house has held up incredibly well over the 15 years considering I’ve done nothing to it.”
From housing happy hens to creating functional storage space, this customer’s Outpost Buildings have become a lasting part of his lifestyle block- practical, durable and built to fit right in.
Supporting local
Robert says one of the benefits of dealing with Outpost was the support available from the team throughout the process.
"The office was easy to contact, and the team were knowledgeable and helpful when I had questions about the build."
Because his property is located in a high wind zone, Robert chose to add extra roofing screws and was able to call the team for advice on the best option to use.
"It is definitely a positive that it's made in New Zealand," he says.
