Kitset Garage

Tough, durable kitset garages designed by New Zealanders, for New Zealanders, and constructed from New Zealand sourced materials. Add a brand new space for your vehicles with one of our kitsets!

What is a kitset garage?

While the garage might not be the prettiest room in the house, it is one of the most important. It’s many things to many people: it’s a workshop, a storage spot, a laundry room, and, of course, it’s where you keep one of the most expensive pieces of kit you own, safe and secure: your vehicle.

However, for as useful as a garage is, not every home comes with one - or, in some cases, not enough of them, if you’ve got a lot of drivers in the family. But building a brand new garage is a difficult, time-consuming process.

An Outpost Buildings kitset garage offers a faster, more affordable and ultimately more convenient alternative, providing all the benefits of a traditional garage but without all the extra hassle.

How does it work?

Our kitsets come with everything you need to put together your own garage, all in a single package. That includes the framing, the cladding, everything down to the nails and screws. It even comes with step-by-step instructions. All you need to do is have a basic set of tools and you could be building your own garage over the course of a weekend.

And if you prefer to have it done by a professional? That’s something we’ve thought of too, and we even recommend this for our more advanced garage kitsets. Our kitsets are just as easy for a builder to put together, and it’ll be even faster than a DIY project, ensuring you get your garage up and your vehicle(s) protected with a tough, durable shelter that much quicker.

We’ll even handle shipping the kitset for you, transporting your chosen kitset to your nearest Toll transport depot for free and, from there, to your property via hiab truck for an additional charge.

Whether you’ve got a light car, an SUV, a motorbike, or even a moped, we’ve got a garage that’s perfect for your needs. Just pick a spot, pick a design, line up a builder (or prep for a DIY project), and we’ll handle the rest.

The benefits of a kitset garage

Need space for an extra vehicle or want to provide extra protection to an existing part of your fleet? Outpost Buildings garages are an excellent addition to any property that’s looking for some extra space to park the car, truck, tractor or motorbike.

(Nearly) instant vehicle space

Our garage kitsets are easy to build, containing everything you need to put it together yourself (for smaller kits) or with the help of a builder (for advanced/larger kits). This makes sure you get your garage up with as little delay as possible, and with a higher bar of quality too due to the step-by-step instructions included.

Easy customisability

The core of our kitset garages is New Zealand timber. This doesn’t just make it tough and flexible, but also makes it fantastically customisable. If you want to add shelving or other storage options, you just need some screws or nails - unlike metal or plastic sheds, which are far tougher to add to once constructed.

Flexible use

Garages often become far more than just a place to put your vehicle. They become workshops, storage spaces, even entertaining spaces. That’s why we’ve designed our kitset garages to be flexible in their use, making them simple to convert with a couple of hours’ work. You can even change them into a different kind of lifestyle shed.

Portability

The vast majority of the Outpost Buildings range is portable, and our garage kitsets are no different. If you decide that you’d prefer them somewhere else, they’re easy to move either with a 4WD and a tow rope, or a hiab truck for the larger models. This also means you can sell your garage to another person if you don’t want or need it anymore. And, of  course, our garages can be installed on permanent foundations as well. The choice is yours!

Built tough

All our kitsets are made to exacting standards, meeting or exceeding the requirements laid out by the New Zealand Building Code. This makes our kitsets tough, durable, and able to protect your vehicles against the weather, vandalism and theft. With the right care, your kitset garage can last for decades.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I build my own garage in New Zealand?

Depending on what you want to include in your garage, yes! You can build your own. Our kitsets are a great option for a DIY project if you’re a handy sort, though we recommend that our larger kits are constructed by professional builders due to the weight and complexity of some of the components.

However, keep in mind that if you want to have your kitset garage wired or plumbed, the laws around this kind of dangerous work still apply, kitset or not. Thankfully, we design our kitset garages to not require either plumbing or electrical work to get maximum performance, so adding it is completely optional.

In the past, constructing a garage would often require consent - and in a lot of cases, you still need it. However, due to recent law changes and added exemptions around “low-risk” buildings, there’s a good chance that an Outpost Buildings garage kitset doesn’t require one!

However, you must check with your local council and the New Zealand Building Code to ensure that the design you pick and the manner in which you want to use it still falls under the exemptions.

If you’re not sure, you can ask one of our helpful team members or your preferred builder and they’ll be able to point you in the right direction.

How much does a garage cost?

Contrary to what you might have heard, building a garage doesn’t have to cost an arm and a leg. We’ve designed a broad range of different kitsets that are perfect for use as a garage, covering off every size of budget: from mini moped to towering trucks.

Better yet, because you’re choosing to use a kitset, you’ll be able to avoid a lot of the extra costs involved with building a permanent garage. And at the end of its use, you’ll be able to sell your portable garage as well, putting money back into your pocket. Save money up front, and get some of it back at the end of your ownership. Win-win.

What are our kitset garages made from?

We build all of our kitsets from materials sourced from NZ suppliers wherever possible, including our renowned sustainably grown New Zealand pine, which makes up the framing and the core of our kitsets.

Depending on your kitset style, you can expect to find:

Durable treated timbers

Strong corrugated iron roofing

Galvanised fittings and fixings

Our garages are made from tough, durable materials, designed with New Zealand conditions and New Zealander’s needs in mind.
